About the Author

Glenn Doman received his degree in physical therapy from the University of Pennsylvania in 1940. From that point on, he began pioneering the field of child brain development. In 1955, he founded The Institutes' world-renowned work with brain-injured children had led to vital discoveries regarding the growth and development of well children. The author has lived with, studied, and worked with children in more than one hundred nations, ranging from the most civilized to the most primitive. Doman is also the international best-selling author of six books, all part of the Gentle Revolution Series, including How To Teach Yor Baby To Read, How To Teach Your Baby Math, and How To Give Your Baby Encyclopedic Knowledge.

Douglas Doman is Vice President of The Institutes for the Achievement of Human Potential and the son of founder Glenn Doman. His early years working at The Institutes were spent establishing the School for Human Development for brain-injured young adults. He worked closely with Bruce Hagy to create the world’s first Human Development Course, a circuit of physical activities that promote neurological organization and development.

 

Bruce Hagy is the former director of The Institutes for the Achievement of Physical Excellence. He joined The Institutes' staff in 1974, and his background in health and physical education quickly led him to become involved with the physical challenges posed by both well and hurt children.

In India these new planning ideas inspired several specialized reports after 1900, most of which drew explicitly on British, or occasionally German, ideas. The most complete of these studies was the Richards Report on Calcutta, prepared for the Calcutta Improvement Trust and published in 1914.

Its major concerns included the building and widening of roads, slum clearance and improvement, legislation, and suburban planning. As background, it included written and visual documentation of living conditions, through charts, photographs, and maps. Richards emphasized that conditions in Calcutta differed greatly from those in urban Britain, and made some allowance in that regard. In general, however, his report exemplifies the attempt by British planners, along with Indian elites, to impose their vision on colonial cities.

Richards’ report was well-received by leading British planners of the day. A notice in Garden Cities and Town Planning claimed that it was "the most complete report on town conditions and possibilities which has yet been issued". While the immediate impact of the report in Calcutta is moot - Richards was highly critical of the past practices of local officials, and his views were unpopular with his superiors - the Richards Reports remains a crucial insight into both the development of modern town planning and the colonial period in India.

Prison, also known at different times and in different countries as band house, bate sohar, big house, big pasture, bit kili, calaboose, kalabus, and quod, plays a significant role in the society and history of a nation. This global encyclopedia provides a glimpse into important prisons, prison reformers, famous prisoners, prison architecture, prisoner culture, and more. According to editor Roth, "this book is dedicated to offering the most current research available on all the prison systems in the world, past and present." Because of the limitations inherent in a one-volume encyclopedia, larger ethical issues such as the death penalty were purposely excluded, as were war-related prisons such as POW camps, concentration camps, and internment camps.

Arrangement is alphabetical. Entries range in size from a few sentences to a few pages and include sources consulted. The material is well written and easy to digest. A substantial number of the more than 450 entries cover individual countries and their prison systems; these are complemented by more specific entries, such as Gulag and Midnight Express.

Introductory material includes an alphabetical list of entries, a topical list of entries, and a chronology of the world's prisons from circa 1900 BCE to 2004. The encyclopedia also offers a bibliography and 14 appendixes on a variety of topics, including writings by prisoners and prison employees, prison museums, famous prisoners, and general, French, and Soviet prison slang.
